Meeting the New Neighbors...

On Monday, early evening, THE author and I drove over to the new house with some paint samples for the outside of the house. We chose the brick for the front of the house back last Winter. We like the brick but are having a heck of time figuring out a house color to go with it. The problem with the brick is that when you are up close to it, it looks red. From the street, however it looks brown. We have tried five different colors and finally found one that will work.

We were painting it on next to the trim and we heard kids talking behind us. We turned around to see three dads and about nine children ages 4 to 9. They introduced themselves as did we. For some reason the meeting threw THE author off and he started babbling. He mentioned to the group that we own a publishing business and were buying the house together. Then he said, "We're both divorced." My head snapped around to see if I just heard right. I know I am divorced, but THE author has never been married. He was just nervous, I guess. I wasn't planning on telling the neighborhood we were the token gay couple; I just thought they would figure it out on their own. We had already met the couple that is building next to us, and THE author introduced me to them as his partner. Anyway THE author feels horrible and we did talk about it. Just kinda threw me.

Tuesday at noon, my son came home from Afghanistan. It was a very moving ceremony at the convention center. The little old vets gave everyone a small American flag and free bottled water was available. If you would like to see photos of the homecoming go to the blog I set up for Jace. He came over today and we spent the afternoon together. It is great to have him home safe and sound.

The work on the new house is moving right along. Carpet is finished. They turned on the water today. My bathroom sprung a leak behind the wall and they had to tear up my closet to get to the water pipes to repair them. Luckily only the carpet pad was damaged in my closet so they dried out my closet and put in the carpeting. The pillar on the front steps was installed. All the knobs on the cabinets, towel racks, door knobs and the dishwasher are in. They poured the concrete patio in the backyard, under the deck. The tile in the kitchen went up. The kitchen sink and counter are in. The guys doing the outside concrete did a nice job. I snapped a picture of one of them. Kinda a cross between Jimbo and Seann William Scott...

Yes I love summer!

I think those unexpected encounters always have the potential to be awkward - although it is curious how you can suddenly become "divorced" when you've never been married! I'm happy for you that your son is home safe and sound.

Oops, that was me just above. I must have had the "Anonymous" selected by mistake...

Thanks, Thom. It was humorous to see THE author babble. He's usually SO in control.

Lordy. I'm honored that you would compare me to that one. Care to send the original? I could use a new desktop image.
